The University of South Florida volleyball team wasted little time getting back to its winning ways Friday night.
The Bulls (7-9 overall, 1-1 The American) needed just 79 minutes to sweep past Rutgers (4-13, 0-3) at The Corral, using an efficient team outing and strong overall play from the right side.
Carissa Whalen and Kayla Bivins teamed up on the right side to connect on 14 kills, hitting a combined .333 to help the Bulls outhit Rutgers .214-(-).035. USF committed just 11 hitting errors as a team, while forcing the Scarlet Knights into 25 over three sets.
Andrea Rodriguez Gomez played a big role in Rutgers' offensive troubles, as USF's senior middle blocker racked up seven blocks, putting pressure on the Rutgers hitters throughout the match.
The Bulls' back row picked up most of the balls the snuck past USF's block, as USF allowed just seven kills per set. Freshman Dakota Hampton led the Bulls with 19 digs, and Amy Van Sant added 18. Natalia Soares tallied her fifth double-double of the season, notching 20 assists and 12 digs.
Offensively, Whalen led USF with 10 kills, and Ciara Brown added eight, playing errorless volleyball.
USF returns to the floor Sunday at noon, taking on Connecticut in The Corral. Fans in middle school and younger are invited to take part in a free one-hour clinic immediately following the match Sunday.
