TAMPA - The University of South Florida volleyball team got back to its winning ways Friday night, overcoming a slow start to dispose of Houston in four sets at The Corral, 20-25, 25-11, 25-19, 25-23.
The Bulls (16-13 Overall, 10-5 The American) used 13 blocks to shut down the Cougars' offense, forcing Houston into 34 errors and an .060 hitting percentage. Senior Andrea Rodriguez Gomez had a part in forcing at least eight errors, collecting seven block assists and a big solo block to pace USF at the net.
Offensively, it was the Erin Fairs show, as Fairs went off for 22 kills and hit .400, accounting for 47 percent of the Bulls' kills. Fairs added 11 digs and four blocks in the win as well.
After suffering a 25-20 first-set loss, the Bulls' passing responded in the second set. USF improved its serve-receive, and it paid dividends for the offense. The Bulls hit an efficient .296, and pressured the Cougars into a negative .167 hitting percentage to roll to a 25-11 win, tying the match at intermission.
Seven kills from Fairs and another three kills on four swings from Ciara Brown allowed USF some breathing room in the third set as the Bulls committed just three errors to out-hit Houston .265-.048 in the set. USF would hold the Cougars under .100 one last time in the fourth set, getting four digs apiece from Wylie Devlin and Dakota Hampton to shut down Houston.
Fairs was the only Bull to reach double-digit kills, but USF got help in the form of eight kills from Brown, as well as seven kills from Kayla Bivins and five kills on nine swings from Jennica Mullins. Hampton led USF with 12 digs while Amy Van Sant and Fairs each added 11.
The Bulls finish off their home season Sunday at noon as they host SMU on senior day. Following the match, USF will host its final free one-hour volleyball clinic, open to middle school aged students and younger.
