TAMPA - Andrea Smith was rewarded for her stellar senior
season on Thursday when the guard was named as one of three unanimous selections
on the All-Big East First Team.
Senior Andrell Smith earned a spot on the All-Big East
Second Team while forward Alisia Jenkins made the All-Freshman Team.
Andrea Smith leads the Bulls with an average of 16.4 points
per game that ranks her sixth in the Big East. The Lakeland, Fla., native
currently has 985 career points and could reach 1,000 at this weekend's Big
East tournament.
Andrea Smith has posted three double-doubles this season and
tied her single-game career high with a 35-point performance Feb. 20 at
Louisville.
"I think to be named on the first team in one of the premier basketball conferences in the country is a great accomplishment," head coach Jose Fernandez said.
Like her twin sister, Andrell Smith could reach the
1,000-point mark as a Bull at the Big East tournament. The guard has 970 career
points with USF and is second on the team with an average of 13.7 points per
game this season. Smith has a team-high 135 assists and ranks fourth in the Big
East in the category.
"To move over to the point guard spot and to make the second team, I'm very happy for her as well," Fernandez said.
Jenkins, a 6-foot-1 forward, has been a consistent force on
the glass for the Bulls in her first collegiate season. The Statesboro, Ga.,
native leads the team with 178 rebounds and has posted four double-doubles
while averaging 6.6 points per game.
"For a freshman to be named as one of the top 10 in the Big East is a great accomplishment," Fernandez said. "She runs the floor, she can defend on the perimeter and she gets it off the glass. Along with Courtney Williams, I thought we had two players that were deserving of that honor."
The eighth-seeded Bulls' Big East tournament title pursuit
begins in the second round 2 p.m. Saturday when they face ninth-seeded Rutgers at the XL Center in
Hartford, Conn. USF (20-9, 9-7) reached 20 wins for the fourth time under Fernandez.
The Big East will announce its player, coach, freshman and
scholar of the year on Friday at 2 p.m. Live coverage of the press conference
can be seen on BigEast.org.
