TAMPA – USF swept Alcorn State and extended its winning streak to eight games on Sunday.

Buddy Putnam hit a three-run bomb to help the Bulls rout Alcorn State, 12-0, in the series finale at USF Baseball Stadium.

“They got it done,” said head coach Lelo Prado.  “We needed the sweep and we got it.”

Alex Vetter pitched 2.2 innings in his first career start.  The right-hander gave up four hits, two walks and one strikeout.

Nolan Thomas came in to relieve Vetter.  Thomas (4-1) pitched 3.1 solid innings allowing no hits, no runs, no walks and one strikeout.

“Thomas threw the ball really well,” said Prado.

Kyle Teaf led-off the first inning with a walk to stretch his on-base streak to 30 consecutive games.

“He's a good player and he just competes,” said Prado.

USF got on the board in the second inning.  Zac Gilcrease led-off with a single through the right side, Austin Lueck drew a walk and Nik Alfonso hit a RBI-single to score Gilcrease.  Teaf followed with a sac-bunt that brought home Lueck and Levi Borders singled to right center to plate Norton and put the Bulls up 3-0.

James Ramsay led the way with a single in the third, Jimmy Falla followed with a double to move both runners into scoring position and Chris Norton hit a base clearing double to extend the lead to 4-0.

The Bulls increased their lead to 7-0 in the fourth frame scoring two runs on two hits.  Falla hit a sac-fly to score Teaf and Levi Borders was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score Alex Mendez.

USF (22-14) kept things rolling in the seventh.

Luke Maglich hit a two-out, two-run RBI single that scored Pardo and Mendez to build a 12-0 lead.

Mendez, Chris Norton and Gilcrease all had a multi-hit game to help the Bulls outhit the Braves 16-5.

USF will travel to face Stetson in a one-game series 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in Deland, FL.  The team will remain on the road for a three-game weekend series with conference rival University of Connecticut in Storrs, CT.  Game one is set for a 3 p.m. start Friday, April 19.

“We did what we needed to do and we have to get ready for Tuesday,” Prado said.
