USF Defense Dominates UCF in 63-38 Victory

TAMPA, JAN. 18, 2014 – USF is 3-0 on the road in American Athletic Conference play after bottling up in-state rival UCF in a 63-38 victory Saturday night at CFE Arena in Orlando.

USF (9-8, 4-2) got 18 points from Courtney Williams and 11 more from Inga Orekhova, while UCF (8-9, 1-5) went 14-for-57 from the field (24 percent) in its lowest scoring game of the season.

Senior Akila McDonald scored nine points and posted a team-high 10 rebounds to help the Bulls finish with a 46-39 edge on the glass in the programs' first meeting since USF won, 67-58, in Tampa on Nov. 21, 2000. The Bulls now hold a 19-8 edge all-time against UCF and have won the past 14 meetings with the Knights.

USF took a 27-16 lead into the break and wound up dominating inside with a 32-10 edge in points in the paint. The Bulls also scored 22 points off 20 turnovers as UCF was looking for its first win over USF since 1980.

Laura Marcos Canedo got the start at point guard and combined with Trimaine McCullough and Shalethia Stringfield for six assists and just two turnovers. Alisia Jenkins, The American's top rebounder, grabbed nine boards and Orekhova grabbed all of her seven rebounds on the defensive end as USF improved to 4-2 on the road overall this season.
