TAMPA, NOV. 21, 2014 – Getting balanced offense throughout the lineup, the USF volleyball team completed a season split Friday night.
The Bulls (12-17 overall, 6-11 The American) reversed rolls with Houston from the teams' earlier matchup, knocking off the Cougars in four sets on the road in another close match, 25-17, 27-25, 24-26, 26-24.
Senior middle blocker Jennica Mullins recorded a team-high seven blocks as USF outblocked Houston 12-10, and outhit the Cougars .236-.172, improving to 6-9 in the conference season.
Mullins helped the Bulls out to a hot start, knocking down back-to-back kills early in the first set and contributing a pair of blocks in USF's 10-1 run. Despite trailing 4-1, the Bulls took control of the first set fo the most lopsided contest of the night in a 25-17 decision.
Involved in a much closer second set, the Bulls' seniors in Mullins and Bree Scarbrough came through. Tied at 25, Scarbrough and Mullins each posted a big kill, sending the Bulls into the break up 2-0 on Houston. Junior outside hitter Erin Fairs added five of her team-best 17 kills in the set.
After falling in a close third set, the Bulls completed another comeback in the fourth. Down 22-24, USF staved off consecutive set points with kills from freshman Joli Holland and sophomore Alexus Heidelberg. After a Mullins/Scarbrough team block, Heidelberg finished the game off, pounding out her 12th kill of the match and sending USF out of Houston with the win.
Heidelberg added nine digs to her 12-kill night, hitting .286 in a match with plenty of offensive firepower. Fairs' 17 kills and 19 digs led the team in both categories, while Mullins and Holland combined for 16 kills from the middle blocker position, hitting a combined .327. Scarbrough ended the match with six kills and three blocks, while Holland had four blocks.
USF plays its final road match Sunday against Tulane at 2 p.m., and will play at home in the USF Corral Wednesday and Friday this week to finish out the regular season. For tickets, call 1-800-GoBulls.
