TAMPA, FEB. 14, 2014 – Erica Nunn struck out 10 and didn't allow an earned run most of the way, but the Bulls couldn't get it going at the plate in a 1-0 USF Tournament loss to Binghamton on Friday at USF Softball Stadium.
Nunn (1-1) set a new career high in strikeouts while scattering two hits in 4 2/3 innings in the second game of the USF Tournament for USF (2-3). The Bulls began their tournament run with an 8-6 victory over Wright State earlier Friday.
Nunn, a sophomore left-hander from Apex, N.C., struck out five of the first six batters she faced, but a leadoff walk set the tone for Binghamton in the decisive fourth inning. Taylor Chaffee put runners on the corners with a double to left field and a fielding error paved the way for the only run the Bearcats needed to open the season with a victory.
Lee Ann Spivey capped off a stellar first day at the plate with a 2-for-3 performance after the sophomore catcher went 2-for-3 with two RBIs against Wright State. Juli Weber, Stephanie Medina, Monica Santos, Veronica Gajownik and Ashli Goff each added hits for the Bulls.
Sara Nevins struck out five in 2 1/3 innings of shutout relief after the senior left-hander struck out five and gave up one hit in three scoreless innings of relief against Wright State.
The Bulls look to bounce back during their USF Tournament doubleheader Saturday at USF Softball Stadium. USF faces Pittsburgh at 1:45 p.m. before taking on top-ranked Tennessee at 4 p.m.
