
Super Williams Steals Show in Big Win at Temple

PHILADELPHIA, FEB. 22, 2014 โ Senior guard Inga Orekhova may have broken the 900-point barrier, but it was Courtney Williams who stole the show.
Orekhova jumped past 900 career points with a seven-point effort, and Williams shattered her career high in points, scoring 35 at Temple to lead the Bulls to an important road win over the Owls, 72-69 Saturday afternoon.
USF (15-11, 10-5) held off a hot-shooting Temple team with a strong defensive effort in the second half, holding Temple to a .270 shooting performance in the final 20 minutes, while riding Williams' 15-point half. The Bulls overcame Temple shooting 19-20 from the free throw line, boasting a 2:1 assist-to-turnover ratio and shooting .453 from the floor.
Both teams seemed content pushing the pace of play in the first half, combining to put up 51 field goal attempts as well as 22 free throws. Temple made use of its chances from the charity stripe, putting in 13 of 14 chances, and the Owls shot .565 from the field to lead USF through the majority of the half.
A very unselfish Bulls' offense kept the Bulls in the game during Temple's run however, as the Bulls dished out 12 first-half assists to keep pace with the Owls. Williams carried a heavy load of the shots for USF, knocking down nine field goals for 20 first-half points to help the Bulls into the locker room down by just one, 41-40.
The teams slowed things down in the second half, but Temple continued to shoot well and extended the lead as much as seven, at 58-51. The Bulls turned it on in the final 10 minutes, using a 13-2 run and gaining their first lead of the second half, and extending it to as many as five points.
The Owls weren't done however, chipping into the lead and re-tying the game at 69 with a baseline three-pointer in the closing minute. On the next possession, Williams drew a foul on her drive to the basket, and knocked down both free throws to put USF up for good. Akila McDonald later extended the lead to three, and the Bulls survived a scare in Philadelphia, improving to 10-5 with three conference games remaining.
Williams led the Bulls with three steals and seven rebounds to go along with the first 30-point game from USF this season, and Alisia Jenkins added eight points and five rebounds.
McDonald was a dominant rim protector, contributing four of the Bulls' 11 blocks, and Shalethia Stringfield continued her strong play, notching six assists.
