CLEARWATER, FLA. FEB. 22, 2014 – Erica Nunn and Sara Nevins combined to throw a no-hitter as the Bulls defeated Illinois State, 5-0, in their first game of the NFCA Lead-Off Classic in Clearwater, Fla.
Freshman Ta'coia Williams led USF (5-4) at the plate with a career-high four runs batted in, including her second home run of the season.
The game was suspended Friday afternoon in the bottom of the fourth because of inclement weather and was resumed at 10 a.m., Saturday morning.
Williams recorded her first RBI of the game in the first inning with a squeeze bunt that scored Juli Weber from third.
That run would be all the Bulls would need as Nunn threw four innings of no-hit ball while striking out eight Redbirds to pick up her second win of the season. Nevins took over the last three innings to preserve the no-hitter and register her first save of the year.
The Bulls added some insurance in the fifth thanks to a three-run homer by Williams to increase the lead to four. It was the second home run of the year for Williams after hitting one against Florida on opening night in her first career at-bat.
Karla Claudio picked up her first RBI as a Bull with a single up the middle in the sixth to account for the final run of the game.
USF will play two more games on Saturday with contests against James Madison (2:30 p.m.) and Louisiana-Lafayette (5 p.m.) at the Eddie C. Moore Complex.
