TAMPA, MARCH 11, 2014 – The Bulls tied a program record with four home runs as they powered past Central Michigan, 9-1, at the USF Softball Stadium on Tuesday evening.
Senior shortstop Kourtney Salvarola (Arnold, Md.) led the power surge with two homers to take the team lead with seven on the year.
Lee Ann Spivey (Palm Coast) broke out of her slump with two hits and two RBI, including a bomb that landed on top of the batting cages in left center to end the game. She also got the Bulls on the board in the second inning with a single to left field that scored Kassandra Moeller (Fredericksburg, Va.).
The Bulls added three more runs in the third to take a four-run lead. Kristen Wyckoff (Plant City) walked to start the inning, stole second and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Juli Weber (Hegins, Pa.) before finally coming around to score on a fielder's choice by Ashli Goff (Tampa). One batter later, Salvarola hit her sixth home run of the season over the left field fence to make it 4-0.
USF tacked on another run in fourth after an error by Central Michigan's shortstop, Trista Cox, allowed Wyckoff to score her second run of the game.
Danielle Marlink got the Chippewas on the board in the top of the fifth with a single up the middle to cut the Bulls' lead to 5-1.
The Chippewas momentum was short-lived, however, as Salvarola blasted her second homer of the game off the face of the batting cages to give USF a five-run lead in the bottom of the fifth.
Back-to-back jacks by Ta'coia Williams (West Palm Beach) and Spivey made it three home runs in the inning and ended the game as the Bulls went up by eight runs, putting the run-rule into effect.
Erica Nunn (Apex, N.C.) pitched all five innings, racking up seven strikeouts and allowed only two hits while improving to 7-3 on the year.
USF takes on Yale in game two of today's doubleheader at 7:15 p.m.
