TAMPA, MARCH 11, 2014 – Sam Greiner and Sara Nevins combined to throw the Bulls' fifth one-hitter of the season as USF completed the sweep of Tuesday's doubleheader with a 2-0 win over Yale (1-4) at the USF Softball Stadium.
The junior from Sparta, N.J., pitched 6 1/3 innings allowing only one hit while striking out three. The one hit allowed was a career low for Greiner as she cruised to her third win of the year.
USF (20-7) got the scoring started in the third inning as Courtney Goff (Tampa) lead of with a single up the middle and D'Anna Devine (Morrisville, Pa.) reached base on a fielder's choice before advancing to third on a bunt single by Veronica Gajownik (Winter Park). A sacrifice fly by Kourtney Salvarola (Arnold, Md.) allowed Devine to score and give the Bulls a 1-0 lead.
Neither team was able to get much going offensively as both pitchers cruised through the fourth and fifth innings before USF added an insurance run in the sixth.
Karla Claudio (Puerto Rico) singled to left center with one out and was pinch run for by Kristen Wyckoff (Plant City). The speedy freshman stole second and advanced to third on a single by Ashli Goff (Tampa) before beating the throw at home on a squeeze bunt by Nicollette Levine (Lithia) to make it 2-0 heading into the final frame.
Greiner retired the first batter in the seventh but hit Hannah Brennan two pitches later and was relieved by Nevins, who came in to record the final two outs and pick up her third save this season.
Yale's Lindsay Efflandt went six innings, allowing seven hits and two runs while striking out five in her first start of the year.
The Bulls are back at it tomorrow evening with another doubleheader against Providence and Penn at the USF Softball Stadium. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. Purchase tickets HERE.
