TAMPA, March 12, 2014 – After a four and a half hour rain delay, the 51st ranked USF women's tennis team took down SMU 6-1 Wednesday afternoon in an American Athletic Conference match-up at the USF Varsity Tennis Courts.
For the Bulls, it was their ninth straight win, a streak that dates back almost a month to February 14 when they dropped a tough 4-3 decision at LSU.
Like it has been able to do most of the season, USF started the match by winning the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead. At second doubles, Fanny Fracassi and Olaya Garrido-Rivas won a hard fought 8-6 decision while Olga Martinez and Vera Bessonova won handily 8-2 at the third spot.
In singles action, all five wins for USF were won in straight sets. The closest win for the Bulls came at first singles as Loreto Alonso-Martinez won 7-5, 6-1.
SMU was able to pick up their lone point at fourth singles with Yana Erkeeva winning a tiebreaker, 0-6, 7-6 (3), 10-8.
USF (12-3) has a day off before they host No. 43 Memphis in a pivotal American matchup at the USF Varsity Tennis Courts. The match is set to get underway at 11:00 a.m. beginning with doubles.
