TAMPA, MARCH 4, 2014 – The Bulls posted their fifth shutout in six games as they breezed past Western Michigan, 7-0, for their second win of the day Tuesday at the USF Softball Stadium.

Erica Nunn set the tone in the circle, pitching five innings of scoreless ball and striking out seven in her fifth win of the season.

“Keep the other team at zero as long as possible and you'll have an opportunity to score some runs and make some adjustments, which we did today,” head coach Ken Eriksen said.

Lee Ann Spivey continued her hot streak at the plate with two more RBI against the Broncos (7-11), giving her six on the day and a team-best 14 for the year.

Stephanie Medina also had two RBI for the game, going 2-for-3 with two runs as well. Ashli Goff increased her team-leading batting average to .412 for the year with four hits on the day, including a 3-for-3 performance in game two against Western Michigan.

For the seventh straight game USF (16-5) had at least four players record an RBI as Spivey, Medina, Veronica Gajownik and Monica Santos all drove in runs to help lead the Bulls to their ninth straight win.

After two scoreless innings to start the game, Courtney Goff got the scoring started for the Bulls, coming home on a throwing error by WMU's catcher Megan Stamm.

USF built a bit of a cushion in the fourth with three runs on three hits to take a 4-0 lead. Medina started the inning off with a single up the middle and scored one batter later on a triple to left center by Spivey. Gajownik singled home Spivey to give the Bulls a three run lead and Santos had an RBI groundout to cap off the scoring in the fourth.

The Bulls tacked on three more in the fifth starting with a two-run triple by Medina to score Goff and Ta'coia Williams. The triple was Medina's second of the season after not having any over her first three years with the Green and Gold. The senior from Tampa would end up scoring the final run of the game when she came home on a sacrifice fly by Spivey.

Sam Greiner and Karla Claudio combined to pitch two scoreless innings in relief for the Bulls, allowing only one hit.

“Coach Triner is doing an unbelievable job with the pitching staff. When you're keeping teams at zero it makes it a little easier,” Eriksen said.

After a day off tomorrow and practice on Thursday the Bulls will resume play against Northwestern on Friday afternoon at the USF Softball Stadium in the Under Armour Showcase. First pitch is slated for 2:15 p.m. and the Bulls will take on Kansas immediately after. Purchase tickets HERE.
