TAMPA, MARCH 4, 2014 – Lee Ann Spivey hit a grand slam to help the Bulls roll past Maine, 8-0, in five innings Tuesday afternoon at USF Softball Stadium.
Ace Sara Nevins (9-2) surrendered just one hit and struck out eight in USF's eighth straight victory. The Bulls (15-5) have won five of their past eight games by the run rule.
USF seized control during a five-run first inning and all the runs were produced before the Bulls recorded their first out.
Juli Weber led off with a double, Ashli Goff followed with a bunt single and Ta'coia Williams collected her 13th RBI of the season with a single through the left side. The bags were packed for Spivey, who connected for her team-leading fifth homer over the wall in left-center field.
Maine starter Erin Bogdanovich (0-1) exited after facing just seven batters. The left-hander gave up five earned runs on four hits, walked two batters and hit another with a pitch.
The Bulls grabbed a 6-0 lead in the second when Spivey hit a single up the middle and Williams scored from second thanks to a fielding error by center fielder Samantha Ralphs. USF extended its lead to 7-0 in the frame when Monica Santos hit into a fielder's choice with the bases loaded.
USF completed the run rule by playing small ball in the fifth inning. Kristen Wyckoff led off with a bunt single and Weber followed with a bunt single before Courtney Goff hit an RBI single to center with one out.
Weber wound up going 3-for-4 and Spivey and Wyckoff each went 2-for-3 during the Bulls' 12-hit attack.
The Bulls complete their Tuesday doubleheader with a test against Western Michigan at 4:10 p.m. back at USF Softball Stadium.
