TAMPA, MARCH 9, 2014 – The USF softball team snapped a two-game losing streak with a 7-4 win over Utah at the USF Softball Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Ashli Goff led the charge, going 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI while extending her hitting streak to a season-long nine games.
The Utes struck first with an RBI double to left field by Marissa Mendenhall in the top of the second. After hitting a batter, sophomore Erica Nunn recorded two straight outs to work herself out of a jam and avoid any further damage.
The Bulls responded in a big way in the bottom half of the inning, scoring four runs on three hits and three Utah errors.
Nunn got the inning started with a single to right center which was followed by the Utes' first error of the frame on a ground ball to short by Veronica Gajownik. Monica Santos (Tampa) moved both runners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt before D'Anna Devine's infield single scored Dani Wayt from third to tie the game at one.
The Bulls took the lead when Gajownik (Winter Park) knocked the ball loose from Utah's catcher as she was running through home plate. USF kept the scoring going as Goff picked her second hit and first RBI of the day with a single to center to score Devine. She would come around to score on an error by second basemen Hannah Flippen to give the Bulls a 4-1 lead heading into the third.
The senior from Tampa struck again in the fourth when she drove in her second run of the day on a double to left center field. One batter later, Salvarola sent a shot over the right center field wall for her fifth home run of the year to put the Bulls up 7-1.
Despite the big deficit, the Utes battled back in the fifth with three runs of their own. Kate Dickman lined a ball into left center to plate two runs and Anissa Urtez followed that up with an RBI single of her own to make it 7-4.
Nunn (Apex, N.C.) pitched 4 2/3 innings while striking out four to record her sixth win of the year and Sara Nevins came in to shut the door, throwing the final 1 1/3 innings, picking up her second save.
The Bulls finish the weekend with a matchup against St. Joseph's at 6:25 p.m.
