TAMPA, APRIL 12, 2014 – Karla Claudio gave the Bulls a big boost by pitching 3 1/3 innings of shutout ball in USF's 3-1 loss to UCF in Game 2 of Saturday's doubleheader.
Claudio entered the game as a relief pitcher in the third inning and struck out a pair of batters while allowing two hits in her longest outing as a Bull before a crowd of 1,040 at USF Softball Stadium.
USF starter Erica Nunn (9-6) exited with two outs in the third inning after giving up three earned runs on four hits a game after Sara Nevins threw the seventh no-hitter of her career in the Bulls' 4-0 victory.
The Bulls (30-12, 4-4) got a run back in the bottom half of the third when Juli Weber hit an RBI infield single with two outs. Weber, a freshman center fielder from Hegins, Pa., went 2-for-4 in Game 1 and her two-run single paved the way for a four-run fourth for the Bulls in the win.
That's all USF could muster against Mackenzie Audas, who struck out seven and gave up three hits in her third complete game of the season. Kalyn Cenal produced the biggest hit of the game when she connected for a two-run homer in the third for the Knights (29-13, 6-2).
Nunn re-entered the game in the seventh and regrouped nicely by striking out two in a scoreless frame.
The programs will meet back up Sunday for the series finale beginning at 1 p.m. at USF Softball Stadium. Purchase tickets HERE and stay updated on the Bulls all season by following the team on Twitter @USFSoftball.
