Atlanta, Ga., May 16, 2014 – USF got a quality start from Casey Mulholland but the bats went silent a night after scoring eight runs falling to Georgia Tech 3-0 Friday night at Russ Chandler Stadium.
USF drops to 26-28 on the year while the Yellow Jackets improve to 31-24.
Mitch Earnest put the first two runs on the board for Georgia Tech in the second inning as he hit the first pitch he saw into leftfield for a two-run single.
An inning later, Daniel Spingolo led off the frame with a home run over the right field wall to put the Yellow Jackets in front 3-0. It was his third long ball of the year.
Through the first five innings, USF had at least one runner on base including getting its first two runners on in the fifth but were unable to capitalize on the opportunity.
The Bulls didn't go quietly in the ninth as Levi Borders, Buddy Putnam and Austin Lueck began the inning with singles to load the bases with no outs. Unfortunately for USF, back-to-back strikeouts and a groundout ended the ballgame.
Mulholland went seven innings for USF allowing three runs on eight hits. He walked two and struck out six as the righty fell to 4-2 on the year. Brandon Lawson tossed a scoreless eighth in relief. Teaf and Borders each had two hits for USF.
Devin Stanton (5-3) earned the win for Georgia Tech tossing five innings of four-hit ball. Sam Clay earned his seventh save of the year throwing the final four innings surrendering just three hits, all in the ninth. Spingola had the lone multi-hit performance for the Yellow Jackets going 3-for-4 including a home run.
The two sides will play the rubber match of the series tomorrow afternoon at Russ Chandler Stadium with first pitch set for 1:00 p.m. The game can also be viewed on ESPN3.
