Atlanta, Ga., May 17, 2014 – Eight different players picked up a hit for USF but the Bulls couldn't slow down Georgia Tech offensively falling 12-5 Saturday afternoon in the regular season finale at Russ Chandler Stadium.
USF finishes the regular season at 26-29 while the Yellow Jackets improve to 32-24.
Levi Borders got the Bulls off to a good start in the first as the sophomore hit his first career home run to leftfield to put the visitors in front 1-0.
It was a short-lived lead for USF as Georgia Tech responded with two of their on in the bottom half of the inning with a pair of two-out RBI singles. GT tacked on another run in the third on a sacrifice fly to make it a 3-1 ballgame.
The Yellow Jackets broke it open in the fifth plating six runs highlighted by two-run singles by Connor Justus and Daniel Spingola. Georgia Tech scored their final three runs in the seventh on a Mott Hyde two-run home run to leftfield and an A.J. Murray double down the leftfield line.
USF showed some fight in the eighth that began with Austin Lueck being hit by a pitch and Kyle Teaf collecting an infield single. Joe Altieri and Luke Borders followed them with back-to-back RBI singles for the Bulls to cut into the deficit. Later in the inning, Buddy Putnam picked up a RBI on a groundout while Luke Maglich doubled home the final run of the game.
Tommy Peterson suffered the loss for USF going 2.2 innings on a limited pitch count due to the upcoming conference tournament. He allowed three runs on six hits while striking out one. Seven other pitchers saw action for the Bulls highlighted by Lawrence Pardo, Janick Serrallonga and Jordan Strittmatter. Luke Borders picked up the lone multi-hit performance going 2-for-4 with a run scored and RBI.
Ben Parr picked up the win surrendering six hits and one run as he improved to 5-3 on the season. Hyde and Murray each had three hits in the game with Hyde finishing 3-for-5, three runs and two RBIs while Murray was 3-for-4 knocking in four and crossing the plate once.
USF will next play in the American Athletic Conference Tournament next week at Bright House Field in Clearwater. The Bulls are the fifth seed and are awaiting on official pairings and game dates from the conference office which will be announced later this evening.
