TAMPA, May 4, 2014 – Courtney Anderson and Matthew O'Neal won championships in their respective events on the final day of the American Athletic Conference Track and Field Championships held at USF.
Anderson, a senior from Cape Coral, won conference outdoor for the first time in her career and did so in dramatic fashion. Anderson was lining up for her third attempt at 5-9.25 and if cleared, would win the title. However, because she took more than the allotted time, Anderson fouled. A jump-off then ensued between Anderson and Houston's Cassie Wiley. Anderson cleared 5-9.25, a season best, to win the event and earn 10 points towards the team competition.
“It feels great,” Anderson said. “I think I was due for a first place finish at conference after getting second so many times.”
O'Neal won the event with a distance of 52-07.50 (16.04m) on his fourth attempt. Also on his fourth attempt, Shane Lewis (Orlando) had a top distance of 50-05.25 (15.37m) to earn second team all-conference honors. The duo finished as they were ranked going into the completion, one and two.
“It's a blessing to be out here today and be able to compete,” O'Neal said. “It was great for me and Shane to get some points for our team.”
The men's team finished fifth with 82 points behind Louisville (113), UConn (144), Memphis (147) and champion Houston (156.50). The women's team was seventh with 45.40 points behind Rutgers (62), Louisville (77.80), Houston (111.20), UConn (111.60), UCF (138.60) and champion SMU (153.20).
There were a total of nine all-conference performances for the USF men and women which are designated by a top three finish.
