MEMPHIS, Tenn. (Sept. 28, 2014)— The USF women's soccer team dropped its second straight match Sunday afternoon as the Bulls fell, 1-0, to the Memphis Tigers.
The first half was dominated by defensive performances as both teams were limited in opportunities to score. The Tigers were held to only five shots, while the Bulls registered four in the first 45 minutes. Memphis had the only two shots on goal and led in corner kicks (6-1) in the first half.
The second half looked like it would play out much like the first as the teams combined for only five shots in the first 33 minutes. With ten minutes left to play, Kaitlyn Atkins recorded the game winning goal for the Tigers after drawing USF goalkeeper Thordis Aikman out of the net.
Junior Olivia Chance almost found the equalizer with two minutes left in the game, but her shot was saved by the Memphis goalkeeper, keeping USF off the board.
USF dropped to 5-5-1 on the season and 0-2-0 in conference play, while Memphis improved to 4-5-2 and 1-1-0 in conference with the win.
Leticia Skeete led all Bulls with four shots on the day. The sophomore out of Canada also recorded two of the three shots-on-goal for the Bulls.
Despite allowing the one goal, Aikman recorded three saves to increase her total to 17 saves on the year.
The Bulls will head back to Corbett Stadium for a three-game conference homestand, beginning with a Friday night match against Houston. The Oct. 3 matchup is slated for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.
The USF women's soccer team has posted two consecutive 10-plus win seasons and three in the last four years under head coach Denise Schilte-Brown. The Bulls made their first NCAA tournament appearance and recorded their first tournament victory in 2010. USF returns 23 players from last year's roster including All-American Athletic Conference second team forward Demi Stokes and All-Rookie Team defender Leticia Skeete. They also bring back 11 players that appeared in 15 or more games last season.
