TAMPA, Jan. 24, 2015-- Despite forcing multiple third sets, the USF women's tennis team could not fend off the Florida State Seminoles in the ITA Kick-Off. The Bulls (0-2) dropped a heartbreaking 4-1 decision to the Seminoles at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center in Miami.
In doubles, the Bulls kept all their matches close, but couldn't pull ahead of the Seminoles to take the win. Olaya Garrido-Rivas and Jessica Cortes-Chaves fell 6-4 on court one while Alicia Robinson and Juliana Cardoso were topped on court three.
FSU increased their lead in singles to 2-0, as Hailey Grillo fell, 6-0, 6-1, at the No. 6 spot to Daniela Schippers. Freshman Cardoso put USF on the board with a 6-2, 6-3, 3-0 (ret.) win at the No. 5 spot to cut FSU's lead to one.
Florida State then jumped out to a 3-1 lead after Cortes-Chaves fell in straight sets on court four to Yukako Noi. Vera Bessonova and Garrido-Rivas were leading in their respective third sets, but could not finish their matches before Olga Martinez fell on court three, giving FSU the 4-1 victory.
The Bulls will face UNF on Sunday in the consolation match.
