CORAL GABLES (Jan. 25, 2015)— After dropping their first two matches of the season, the USF women's tennis team rebounded with a dominating win over the University of North Florida in the consolation match of the ITA Kick-Off.
USF (1-2) suffered a setback in its first match of the weekend, dropping a 4-1 decision to Florida State. Despite the loss, the Bulls bounced back to capture their first win of the season by topping UNF, 4-1, at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center on the University of Miami campus.
The Bulls took the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots. Sophomores Vera Bessonova and Olga Martinez notched a 6-4 win over Rebeca Pereira and Luise Inert on court two before Olaya Garrido-Rivas and Jessica Cortes-Chaves pulled out a 7-6 win on court one.
UNF tied things up at one as freshman Juliana Cardosa fell 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 5 spot. The Bulls took back their lead with Martinez winning 6-1, 6-3 over Marina Cunnigham at the No. 3 spot.
USF extended their lead to 3-1 with Garrido-Rivas defeating Taylor Hallander, 7-5, 6-4, at the premier spot.
Clinching the match for the Bulls was Cortes-Chaves who wrapped up the match with a 7-6, 6-2 win over Quetzali Vazquez at the No. 4 spot.
The Bulls are back in action on Wednesday, January 28, at 3 p.m. against Florida in Gainesville. USF will play its next five matches on the road before returning home on Saturday, March 7, to take on UNF once again.
