TAMPA (March 28, 2015)— The Bulls became the only undefeated team in the American Athletic Conference thanks to a walk-off double by Andres Leal in the 11th inning to push USF to a 4-3 win over Cincinnati Saturday night.
Back-to-back singles from Luke Maglich and Daniel Portales put two on with just one out for Leal. On a 1-1 count, the sophomore launched a double to the right field wall to score Maglich and give USF the win.
The Bulls (19-8-1, 2-0 American) struck first in the bottom of the second inning thanks to a two-RBI double by Austin Lueck. Buddy Putnam led off the inning with a single before advancing on a Daniel Portales groundout. Andres Leal reached on a fielding error by the pitcher to put runners on the corners for Lueck. The senior came up big, launching a two-out, two-strike double to right center to score Putnam and Leal.
Cincinnati (6-18, 0-2 American) would cut the lead in half in the fourth inning on a sacrifice bunt by RJ Thompson to plate Ian Happ who reached on a leadoff single. The Bearcats would tie the game in the top of the sixth on an RBI single by Thompson.
USF answered back in the bottom of the sixth on a Luke Maglich RBI double to score Luke Borders, but the Bearcats tied the game once more in the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Ian Happ.
The Bulls went to extra innings for just the third time this season, picking up their second extra-inning victory. With the win, USF is the only team to come out on top in its first two conference games of the season.
Michael Farley was stellar in his four innings of work, striking out a career-high nine batters and giving up no walks. The pitching staff tallied 14 strikeouts for the second straight night as starter Casey Mulholland picked up four and Tommy Peterson recorded one. Peterson earned the win, giving up no runs or hits in one inning of work.
Maglich went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI, while Leal was 1-for-4 with a run and the most important RBI of the game in the 11th.
Jarod Yoakam took the loss for Cincinnati, falling to 1-4 on the season. In five innings of work, he gave up one run on three hits while walking one and striking out one.
USF and Cincinnati return to action Sunday, March 29, at 1 p.m. for the final match of the series as the Bulls look for their third sweep of the season.
