Bulls' Comeback Falls Short in Loss to UNF

TAMPA (March 7, 2015)— A late comeback, fueled by wins from Vera Bessonova and Jessica Cortes Chaves, just wasn't enough as the USF women's tennis team fell 4-3 to UNF Saturday morning.

The Bulls dropped the doubles point, falling on courts one and three. Bessonova and Olga Martinez had a 4-3 lead on court two, but their match was suspended once the doubles point was clinched.

Despite falling behind 3-0 early on, the Bulls did not let up with Cortes Chaves picking up the first point for the Bulls, winning 6-3, 6-1 on court three. It was the second straight win for the freshman and second win this season over a UNF player.

Bessonova notched the second point for the Bulls, winning in dominating fashion on court one. The sophomore gave up just three games, winning in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2. It was the sophomore's second straight win and put USF within one point of UNF.

UNF clinched the match with wins on courts five, two and four. Cardosa fought hard to force a third set on court four and prolong the match, but her efforts fell just short as she was defeated, 6-3, 7-5.

Though the Osprey's had already secured the win, Laura Argente fought to three sets, winning the tiebreaker 10-8 to give the Bulls their third point.

The Bulls will return to the courts, Thursday, March 12, as they take on Florida State. The match is slated to begin at 11 a.m. and is free to the public.
