TAMPA, MARCH 9, 2015 – Freshman guard Troy Holston Jr. averaged 20.0 points and 7.0 rebounds over the last two games and was named the American Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week on Monday.
The Queens, N.Y. native recorded his first-career double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds in USF's 74-45 win over UCF on Wednesday. Holston Jr. then added a game-high 21 points with four rebounds in a 67-63 loss to Tulane on Saturday. He also went 5-of-11 from three-point range over those two games.
Over the last seven games, 58.9 percent of USF's scoring has come from freshmen and a big reason why has been the play of Holston Jr. who has scored in double-figures in seven of the last eight games. The sharp-shooter has been on target from 3-point range making 13-of-24 attempts (64.2 percent) over the last three games.
It was Holston Jr.'s first weekly honor from the conference office. Senior Corey Allen Jr. has been the only other weekly award winner this season. He was named the conference's player of the week on Dec. 1 and was on the weekly honor roll on two occasions.
Farad Cobb of Cincinnati was named the conference player of the week on Monday, while Ryan Boatright (UConn), Devonta Pollard (Houston), Markus Kennedy (SMU), Will Cummings (Temple) and James Woodard (Tulsa) were named to the weekly honor roll.
The Bulls are 9-22 (3-15) this season and are the youngest team in the country when it comes to prior NCAA Division I experience. USF plays at UConn (17-13, 10-8) on Thursday at 8 p.m. on ESPNews. USF has signed three players for next season including two four-star recruits and will have former five-star guard Roddy Peters eligible next season after redshirting this year. Orlando Antigua is in his first season as head coach after spending the past five seasons as an assistant coach at Kentucky.
