TAMPA (Aug. 21, 2015)— Leave it to Chance.
Senior Olivia Chance picked up right where she left off, scoring the golden goal in double overtime as the USF women's soccer team beat Baylor, 2-1, Friday night in Waco.
"It was one of the most physical games we've ever played,” head coach Denise Schilte-Brown said. “It was a real challenge but as the game went on we gained a lot of confidence. I'm really proud of the girls.”
Chance would need just two looks at the goal to give USF a win in its season opener. The senior picked up her first shot on goal in the first overtime period before finding the back of the net in the 102nd minute on an assist by Cristina Ferral.
Ferral opened up the scoring and put USF up early with a goal in the 62nd minute. An assist by sophomore Jessica Hamrick and aggressive play by Ferral to beat three defenders would allow USF to take the lead.
The lead wouldn't last long as Baylor answered back just five minutes later on an Amanda Hoglund goal in the 67th minute.
Chance, Ferral and Sienna Brooks led the way offensively, all recording two shots for USF. Despite being outshot 14-10 for the game, the Bulls defense, led by seniors Jackie Simpson and Allie Rossi, allowed just one shot during overtime.
"I'm really proud of the girls,” Schilte-Brown said. “It was on the road. Baylor plays a much different style than us and it's hard to beat them at home.”
The Bulls return to Tampa and Corbett Stadium for their home opener Friday, Aug. 28, at 5:30 p.m. USF will face LIU Brooklyn on Friday before taking on Mississippi State on Sunday, Aug. 30 at 10:30 a.m.
