Bulls Finish Winning Weekend with Shutout over LSU

TAMPA (Jan. 24, 2016) — The No. 13 USF men's tennis team (2-0) wrapped up a winning weekend with a dominating performance Sunday afternoon, topping No. 30 LSU, 4-0, at the USF Varsity Tennis Courts.

No. 17 Roberto Cid (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) finished No. 22 Jordan Daigle 7-5 (7-2), 6-2 to cap off an impressive opening weekend. Cid trailed 4-1 in the opening set before rallying back to win the set in a decisive tiebreaker. Cid then rattled off a 6-3 second set win to clinch the win for the Bulls.

Cid was just as impressive in doubles, helping the Bulls jump out to a 1-0 lead with the doubles point win.  Along with senior partner Ignacio Gonzalez (Gijon Asturas, Spain), the duo never trailed in the set, winning 6-3.

“We spoke to the guy's point blank before the doubles started, look, the standard that you brought yesterday was not the standard that we play at, so we need to step it up,” head coach Matt Hill said.  “We are one of the best doubles teams in the country, they just did a poor job of showing that yesterday.”

Vadym Kalyuzhnyy (Donetsk, Ukraine) joined Cid as the only competitors to win their singles matches in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3. Kalyuzhnyy won both his matches this weekend in straight sets at the No. 5 position.

Gonzalez also picked up a singles win to help USF clinch a berth in the ITA National Men's Team Indoor Championship. Gonzales dominated in his first and third sets, winning his match 6-0, 1-6, 6-1 in front of a plethora of fans.

“It was unbelievable,” Hill said. “This is why you work your tail off to get into the Top 15, so you can host these events, so you can be the No. 1 seed here and have your crowd enjoying and experiencing the level of this team.”

The Bulls will move onto the championships in Charlottesville, Va. taking place Feb. 12-15.
