TAMPA (Jan. 29, 2016) – In a dominating performance, the USF women's tennis team clinched their first win of the season by defeating FGCU, 7-0, Friday afternoon at the USF Varsity Tennis Courts. The win over the Eagles also secured head coach Cristina Moros her first win at the helm of the Bulls.
The Bulls (1-2) appeared locked in right from the start of the match. USF won all three doubles matches and never looked back. Jessica Cortes Chaves (Monterrey, Mexico) and Olga Martinez (Barcelona, Spain) clinched the doubles point with a 7-6 (5) win and improved to 2-1 on the season.
After doubles play, USF carried the momentum right into singles. Martinez secured the first singles point for the Bulls earning her first win of the year, 6-3, 6-0. Chaves also captured her first singles win of the year as she dominated her opponent, 6-1, 6-1.
The Bulls cruised to the finish as they won every match in straight sets. Sophomore Juliana Cardosa (Descalvado, Brazil) improved to 2-1 on the season after battling back from a first set deficit to win her match, 7-5, 6-1. Freshman Ana Roman Dominguez (Spain) won 6-3, 6-3, in the No. 1 spot to improve to 2-1 on the year. The Bulls also saw impressive performances from freshman Nicole Dzenga (Harare, Zimbabwe), who won 6-4, 6-4, and junior Vera Bessonova, (Moscow, Russia) who won 6-1, 6-4.
The Bulls will look to string together consecutive wins when they hit the road to take on No. 2 USC Feb. 6 in Gainesville, Fla. The game against No. 2 USC will also mark the beginning of four straight matches on the road.
