MINNEAPOLIS (Feb. 5, 2016)—The 13th-ranked USF men's tennis team topped the No. 23 Minnesota Golden Gophers, 7-0, Friday night at the Baseline Tennis Center. The shutout victory ended a 16-match home win streak for the Golden Gophers and improved USF to 3-0 on the season.
USF clinched the doubles point with victories at the No. 1 and 3 positions. Roberto Cid (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic), was paired with Ignacio Gonzalez-Muniz (Gijon Asturas, Spain) in the No. 3 spot for a 6-2 victory.
Dominic Cotrone (Bradenton, Fla.) and Justin Roberts (Nassau, Bahamas) improved to 2-1 in doubles play, with a 6-4 victory over Minnesota's Marino Alpeza/Ruben Weber. Cotrone defeated Weber in the singles No. 2 spot, 6-2, 6-4. The senior transfer has not conceded a set in three matches this season.
Sophomore Peter Bertran (Santiago, Dominican Republic) made his USF debut in the No. 5 spot. His talents were on full display against Alpeza as he won 6-2, 6-4. Gonzalez-Muniz clinched the victory for USF in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3, versus Jeremy Lynn at the No. 6 spot.
After dropping his first set, the nation's 17th-ranked Cid battled back to defeat Matic Spec, 1-6, 6-3, 6-2. Vadym Kalyuzhnyy (Donetsk, Ukraine) worked to a super tiebreaker against Josip Krstanovic, winning 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 (10-8). Sasha Gozun (Orhei, Moldova), capped off the 7-0 shutout, over Justyn Levin, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.
In the last 11 matches, the Bulls have shut out the competition eight times. USF is now 3-0 on the year and will look to extend its win streak on Sunday against No. 3 Texas A&M
