TAMPA (March 13, 2016) – The USF women's tennis team extended its winning streak to five matches by defeating Yale, 4-1, Sunday afternoon at the USF Varsity Tennis Courts.
The Bulls (7-5) fell behind early as they dropped the doubles point. USF would need to win four of the six singles matches to clinch the win.
The first point of the afternoon for the Bulls was secured by sophomore Jessica Cortes Chaves (Monterrey, Mexico). Chaves cruised by her opponent in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2. USF junior Olga Martinez (Barcelona, Spain) followed with the second point and put USF in the lead, as she defeated her opponent, 6-2, 6-1.
Bulls sophomore Juliana Cardoso (Descalvado, Brazil) extended the lead to 3-1 by defeating her opponent in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1. Winner of her last five matches, Cardoso improved to 7-3 on the season.
Junior Vera Bessonova (Moscow, Russia) clinched the fourth and final point of the afternoon for the Bulls. Bessonova was pushed to a deciding third set, but rebounded to win, 6-4, 2-6, 6-1.
The Bulls are back in action Wednesday, March 16, as they take on Iowa at the USF Varsity Tennis Courts at noon. Admission for all home matches is free to the public.
