ORLANDO, Fla. (March 30, 2016) – The USF women's tennis team extended its winning streak to 11 matches Wednesday afternoon by defeating rival UCF, 4-2, at the UCF Tennis Complex in the last conference match of the season.
The No. 56 Bulls (13-5) got off to a slow start against the Knights. USF fell behind 2-0 early in the match, as UCF took the doubles point, then secured the first singles match of the afternoon. After the poor start, the Bulls rattled off four consecutive singles wins to capture the victory.
Junior Olga Martinez (Barcelona, Spain) would strike first for USF. Martinez defeated her opponent 6-1, 7-5 in the four spot to earn her seventh win of the season. Freshman Nicole Dzenga (Harare, Zimbabwe) would quickly follow with a big 7-5, 6-2 win on court six to tie the match.
Playing out of the two spot, junior Vera Bessonova (Moscow, Russia) would give the Bulls their first lead of the afternoon with a huge 7-5, 6-0 win. Bessonova has now won her last six singles matches and improved to 8-3 on the season.
The comeback was capped off by sophomore Jessica Cortes Chaves (Monterrey, Mexico) playing in the premiere position. Cortes Chaves was sharp as she defeated her opponent in straight sets 6-3, 7-6 (7-2).
The Bulls are back in action Sunday, April 3, as they take on No. 64 Rice at the USF Varsity Tennis Courts at 11 a.m in the last home match of the season. Admission for all home matches is free to the public.
