Box Score TAMPA (April 10, 2016)— Erica Nunn proved she can do it all Sunday afternoon, driving in the winning run and picking up her 20th win of the season as USF downed UConn, 1-0. The Bulls swept the Huskies and improved to 8-1 in conference play and 36-10 overall.
Nunn was spectacular in three innings of relief, giving up just one hit while striking out four and allowing no walks. The senior from Apex, N.C. earned the win in all three games of the series, giving up just one earned run on 13 hits. Nunn struck out 21 Huskies and finished the series with a .47 ERA.
The first five and a half inning were a pitcher's duel as neither team could push across a run. The Huskies got a runner to third in the first inning, but solid defense would not allow the run to score. The Bulls also had multiple runners in scoring position, but couldn't plate a run.
The sixth inning would see the first and only run of the game as Nunn drove in Mo Santos on a two-out RBI single. Santos led off with a one-out single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Lee Ann Spivey. Nunn came up clutch with a single to center field, allowing Santos to score from second.
Nunn worked a 1-2-3 inning in the seventh, fittingly capped off by a strikeout to secure her 20th win of the year and her fourth of the week. She finished off her weekend at the plate batting .625 with five hits, two RBI and a run scored.
Cheyenne Eggens earned the start and kept USF in the game for the first four innings, allowing just two hits and no walks in her 14th start of the season.
The Bulls will embark on an eight-game road swing, beginning with a three-game series at Memphis, April 15-17.
