TAMPA, Sept. 26, 2017 –The USF volleyball team reached five season highs in a four sets win Tuesday night inside The Corral against Bethune-Cookman (27-29, 25-21, 25-20, 25-19).
Freshman outside hitter
Doris Carter (Lexington, Ky.) had the best game of her young career with 21 kills. She tallied eight kills in a marathon of set one that the Bulls (5-7, 0-2 The American) dropped 27-29.
USF came out stellar in the second set, grabbing an 8-0 lead. But the Wildcats (2-7) went on a 10-2 run to tie the set. With USF leading 21-20, kills from outside hitters
Priscilla Ehieze (Houston, Texas) and
Reagan Davey (Ocala, Fla.) made it 23-20. Consecutive attack errors from Bethune-Cookman finished off the set to tie the match.
The third set was dead even midway through. The Bulls led 14-12 when a kill by Davey sparked a 7-0 run to make it 21-12. The Wildcats got no closer than four, as USF took the set 25-20.
The Bulls led by as much as seven early in the fourth set until Bethune-Cookman got to within one at 15-14. Ehieze and Davey had kills in the middle of a 6-0 USF run to make it 21-14. Davey totaled five kills in the set and redshirt-junior middle blocker
Clara Payne (Osteen, Fla.) clinched the match with a kill from the right side for the 25
th point.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
63: The Bulls set a season-high with 63 kills compared to 49 from the Wildcats.
62: USF also set a season-high with 62 assists, while Bethune-Cookman tallied 48.
KEY STATS
• Carter also hit .341, committing only six errors. Her 21 kills were also a season-high for USF.
• Payne finished with 13 kills on a .375 hitting percentage and five block assists.
• Ehieze finished with 16 kills on a .355 hitting percentage. Carter (Lexington, Ky.) had 10, 13 and 10 kills, respectively.
• Senior setter
Alex Mendoza (Minneola, Fla.) recorded a season-best 56 assists and is now up to 405 on the season.
• Junior libero
Maria McLamb (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) set a season-high with 29 digs.

About USF Volleyball
In addition to 10 newcomers, USF returns a large core of talent for 2017, led by senior setter Alex Mendoza, who surpassed the 2,000 assist total in 2016 and posted a team-high 1,125 helpers. Redshirt-junior middle blocker Clara Payne finished second on the team with 340 points and senior middle blocker Joli Holland finished fourth with 251.5 points. The Bulls are guided by sixth-year head coach Courtney Draper.
