CLEARWATER, Fla. (Feb. 16, 2018) – USF split its first two games in the Michele Smith Pediatric Cancer Invitational on Friday night. The Bulls fell to Mizzou, 10-5, and defeated Marshall 5-1.
Freshman
Georgina Corrick (2-1) pitched all seven innings against Marshall. The Sanford, Fla., native fanned seven, and allowed just five hits and one earned run.
A trio of juniors highlighted the second inning when
Macy Cook (Uniontown, Ohio) lead off for USF with a walk, followed by a double from
Samantha Worrell (Oviedo, Fla.). The pair was batted in by
Lindsey Devitt (Jacksonville, Fla.) who hit the gap for a single between center and right field.
Senior
Cassidy Boyle (Buchanan, N.Y.) hit a double hard down the left field line for two RBI in the third inning, scoring the final two runs in a 5-1 victory over Thundering Herd.
USF's offense recorded five runs, including two home runs, against Mizzou, but the Bulls were unable to catch the tigers in the 10-5 loss. In the second inning, Devitt sent a 3-run homer over the centerfield fence to try and close in on Missouri's lead, and Boyle sent single into left field for an RBI in the third inning. Senior
Lauren Evans (Land O' Lakes, Fla.) hit her first home run of the season, sixth of her career, to tack on USF's fifth run in the fifth inning.
Quotable
Assistant coach Jessica Moore on Corrick's complete game…
"I think Georgina did a really good job.
Morgan Gross was behind the plate, and I think they were connecting really well. We had a good game plan, and Georgina went out and trusted what she has been doing in training. I was really happy to see what she was able to do tonight."
