USF Falls to No. 19 Oklahoma State, No. 10 Tennessee

The USF softball team scored a total of nine runs on Saturday evening, despite falling to a pair of ranked opponents.

CLEARWATER, Fla. (Feb. 17, 2018) – The USF softball team scored a total of nine runs on Saturday evening, despite falling to a pair of ranked opponents in the Michele Smith Pediatric Cancer Invitational.

The USF (5-6) doubleheader started at 3 p.m. on a beautiful sunny day in Clearwater, Fla. The Bulls kicked off day two of the tournament with No. 19 Oklahoma State (7-2). Redshirt junior Mia Fung hit a three-run blast for her first homerun since returning from an ACL injury last season. She highlighted a 5-run sixth inning that included an RBI sacrifice fly from third baseman Samantha Worrell (Oviedo, Fla.), and an RBI single from senior Amber Atkinson.

The Bulls kept fans on the edge of their seat during a close game against Tennessee on Saturday evening. The Lady Volunteers took a 2-0 lead in the first inning, that was cut in half by a Lindsey Devitt double that sent Fung home. The Bulls tacked on a second run in the top of the fifth to tie Tennessee, 2-2, on an RBI single by Fung.

The Lady Volunteers fired back with two more in the bottom of the fifth, but the Bulls would tie once more. Junior Macy Cook (Uniontown, Ohio) lead off with an 11-pitch walk in the sixth inning, and Devitt followed up with a single. Both runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt to put USF in scoring position. The Bulls' scored two more in the sixth, but fell in the bottom of the frame when Tennessee took the lead for the final time, 7-4.
