Grand Slam by Devitt Gives USF 14th Straight Win

TAMPA (March 17, 2018) –  A grand slam by junior Lindsey Devitt highlighted the Bulls 2-0 day at the Spring Break Classic in Clearwater, Fla., on Saturday afternoon.
USF's (21-12) offensive power has been unstoppable in 14-straight wins. The Bulls have outscored opponents, 89-21, and all six pitchers for USF have been instrumental in six shutouts during the stretch.

USF 1, SJU 0
USF took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth and held the Hawks (9-9) to zero through all seven innings for its fourth straight shutout.

It was a tale of two pitchers in Clearwater, Fla., on Saturday afternoon. Cheyenne Eggens (Vienna, Ohio) earned her third complete-game shutout this season when she faced 25 batters without walking a single one. The junior fanned eight and through 59 strikes in 80 pitches.

In the bottom of the fourth frame, sophomore Brooke Hartman (Port Orange, Fla.) hit an RBI double to left field and scored senior Astin Donovan (Guilford, Conn.) for the sole run of the game. Donovan was the first to get a hit in the game and stole second to put herself in the perfect position to make it home on Hartman's double.

USF 8, PU 5
USF struck early against the Tigers (1-11) with three runs in the first inning. The Bulls loaded the bases three times in the first inning. Atkinson and Samantha Worrell (Oviedo, Fla.) scored three runners on singles to get USF on the board. The Tigers came back with one run in the second inning, and two in the fourth, but Donovan made an incredible diving catch in right field to hold off the Tigers from any more progress.

Worrell hit a solo homer on the first pitch in the fourth inning, and the Bulls loaded the bases on balls to set up for Devitt to wow fans at the Eddie C. Moore Softball Complex. The Jacksonville, Fla., native hit a rocket over the centerfield fence for her fifth home run of the season, and the second grand slam of her career. Devitt's blast gave the Bulls eight total runs, enough to outlast the Tigers who would try to catch up in the final innings.

Quotable
Senior Astin Donovan on her approach to the plate…
"I'm really focusing on pitch selection. I struggled a bit with it in the beginning of the year. Right now, my job is to get on base, in that position we need base runners to make things happen. I was looking for a strike I could manage and made sure to put it on the ground because I know Clearwater has a hard field, and I did my job."

On her diving catch in right field…
"I didn't think I would make it to that ball. I thought it was going to die, but the wind held it up in the air and I was able to get to it."
