TAMPA (March 18, 2018) – Freshman
Georgina Corrick pitched USF's first no-hitter since 2015 in an 8-0 victory over North Florida on Sunday.
Corrick became the first USF freshman to accomplish the feat since 1996 by striking out five batters in five innings.
The British National Team pitcher threw 55 strikes in 88 pitches and finished her fourth complete game. During the weekend, she pitched 11.1 innings in three appearances and allowed just two hits.
The Bulls' offense rallied around Corrick, batting in one or more runs in each of the Bulls' four chances at the plate for a total of eight in the shutout victory. The win improved USF's streak to 15, with its ninth shutout of the season.
Senior
Astin Donovan went 2-for-2 with one run and an impressive four RBI. Junior
Macy Cook had a near-perfect day at the plate. She went 2-for-3 and batted in three runs.
Quotable
Freshman Georgina Corrick on her no-hitter…
"I'm so excited. Honestly, I go into every game and my attitude is, 'I'm going to throw a no-hitter,' but to actually follow through with it is so big for me. I love it."
On her mindset going into each inning…
"I have to do my job. My job is to not let people hit me, and if they do, keep them weak. Keep them to low hits and keep them on the ground. I have such a good defense, Cassidy Boyle made great plays. You are looking at people just snagging balls. That's the best I could do, just keep it on the ground, keep low hits, and the results speak for themselves."
On her team's role in this accomplishment…
"It means so much to me. This team is there for you 100 percent. Whether I'm pitching or not, they've got my back. You know they are going to come out here and smack some balls, and they are going to give 100 percent on the field. It gives me, as a pitcher, so much confidence because I know that I have a job to do, but if I mess up my job a little bit, they've got my back."
Pitching Coach Jessica Moore on Corrick's no-hitter…
"I'm just excited for Georgina. It was Georgina today, who knows who it will be next, that's the type of group we have right now. I think they are having a lot of fun, and I just talked to Georgina and it's really the result of buying into a system. They have really started to figure things out, so I'm really excited for her. She had two pretty competitive walks, and just pitched so well today."
On the defense's roll in today's no-hitter…
"Boyle made some great plays up the middle at shortstop. Our defense all around, our outfield, day-in and day-out they are tracking balls down. Our infield is becoming more and more relentless as we continue to play. Our catchers are doing a great job being competitive and throwing runners out. I think we are starting to gel a little bit better, and this is a good time as we get ready to start conference. I think we are starting to figure some stuff out."
On the offense…
"We faced a really good pitcher today, and we gave some credit to our hitters. They were able to sit on the plate a little bit, and we were happy with their run production today and what they were doing at the plate and what they've been doing over the last couple weeks. I feel like we are getting into a good groove. They are buying into some stuff, and we're getting some good results so hopefully we continue that."
