TAMPA, APRIL 28, 2018 – The University of South Florida baseball team led 2-0 in the fifth, but seven unanswered runs and a dominant outing on the mound gave Memphis a 7-2 win to tie the weekend series Saturday.
After a quick first two innings, the Bulls (28-15, 10-7 The American) finally got to the Tigers (15-29, 2-12 The American) and their junior righty Jonathan Bowlan in the bottom of the third.
Garrett Zech (Naples, Fla.) smashed a double off the right-center wall, then two batters later was brought home on a
Coco Montes (Miami) single. In the next at-bat,
Duke Stunkel Jr. (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) singled to score Montes, making it 2-0.
Memphis jumped ahead in the fifth with four runs on four hits. The Tigers added to the lead with a run in the sixth, two in the seventh, and another in the ninth. By that point, Bowlan had settled down and limited USF to just four hits on the afternoon, going the distance with 18 strikeouts to no walks.
Notables
- Montes and Stunkel Jr. led the way offensively with the two RBI and two of the four hits.
- Zech's double was his eighth of the year.
- USF has had a rubber match in every series of conference play, and is 4-1 in such series.
