Over 200 Bulls Named to American All-Academic Team

TAMPA, June 27, 2018 --Pursuing its mission of excellence in the classroom and on the field, USF Athletics saw a total of 212 student-athletes named to the 2017-18 American Athletic Conference All-Academic Team announced today.
The 212 high-achieving and competitive USF student-athletes honored across AAC-sponsored sports is the second-most in program history, just two shy of the program-record 214 honored in 2015-16. Over 2,600 student-athletes earned honors throughout the American Athletic Conference. The 212 honorees for USF also marked an improvement over the 198 USF student-athletes named to the All-Academic team in 2016-17.
Women's track and field and cross country led USF with 41 honorees, while football was right behind with 36 honorees, the second-most in program history. Women's soccer and softball each tallied 23 players on the list, while 91 percent of the women's golf team made the list. Men's soccer added 16 players in head coach Bob Butehorn's first year at the helm, while 11 volleyball players also received the honor.
The USF women's basketball team added eight honorees after reaching the NCAA Tournament for the fourth straight year, while the baseball team added six honorees after their third NCAA berth in four years.
Men's and women's tennis combined for 15 honorees and men's golf added four to the list. Men's track and field and cross country qualified 13 to the record-list, while men's basketball tallied six players in Brian Gregory's first year at the helm.
To be eligible for the All-Academic Team, student-athletes must have competed in an AAC sponsored sport, attain a minimum grade-point average of 3.00 for the preceding academic year, completed a minimum of two consecutive semesters or three consecutive quarters of academic work, with a total of 18 semester or 27 quarter credit hours. The 2,632 honorees on the AAC All-Academic Team are the most ever for the conference, breaking the previous record set in 2016-17.

The Bulls' athletic program celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2015, having begun with a men's soccer contest in 1965. Nearly 500 student-athletes train and compete in the athletic district located on the east end of the campus in Tampa, Fla. The Bulls have claimed 15 American Athletic Conference team titles since joining the conference in 2013, including four in 2016-17, and own 112 conference championships overall. Ten USF programs reached national post-season competition in the 2016-17 season and nine were ranked in the Top 25 nationally. The Bulls posted a program-record 86 percent Graduation Success Rate in 2016, have logged an annual department grade-point average over a 3.0 for the seven straight semesters, and have seen 179 student-athletes earn their degrees since the fall of 2016.
