Bats Come to Play in 15-4 win over FGCU Tuesday

TAMPA, FLA., April 2, 2019 – The USF baseball team erupted for 20 hits, as 10 different players recorded a base knock in Tuesday's 15-4 drubbing of FGCU.

The Bulls (13-14, 1-5 The American) were trailing the Eagles (19-9, 1-2 ASUN), 3-2, in the bottom of the third. Seven hits and eight runs later, things changed rather quickly. USF loaded the bags on three-straight singles with no outs. Senior Chris Chatfield (Riverview, Fla.) made it four-straight singles to score Joe Genord (Lake Worth, Fla.) from third, tying the game. Freshman Nick Gonzalez (Tampa) recorded the Bulls' fifth-straight single in the next at-bat, scoring Austin Bodrato (Northvale, N.J.) to give the home side a 4-3 edge.

After an Alex Bello (Miami) RBI and Jordan Santos (Tampa) walk with the bases loaded, Genord stepped into the box for the second time in the inning. He unloaded on a fast ball and drove it over the fence in center for his first career grand slam, blowing the game open to make it 10-3. USF would have 13 at-bats in the frame.

FGCU loaded the bases in the first and grabbed a 1-0 lead early. USF responded with two runs in the bottom half. The Eagles retook the lead with two more runs in the second before the Bulls gained control for good in the third. The Bulls tacked on three runs in the sixth and two in the eighth to lead by as much as 12.

The Bulls reached the NCAA Regionals in 2015 for the first time in 13 years and followed that success with a 42-19 record and second NCAA regional trip in three years in 2017. The Bulls continued the success under first-year head coach Billy Mohl in 2018, reaching 36 wins and advancing to the semifinals of the conference tournament for the first time since 2012, while being ranked in multiple polls for the final two months. USF earned its third NCAA Regional berth in the last four seasons and had six all-conference selections in 2018. The team had four players drafted in the 2018 MLB Draft, including the program's fourth first rounder, Shane McClanahan. Junior third baseman David Villar was taken in the 11th round after tallying 24 doubles and hitting better than .370, being named first team all-conference and an All-American. The USF Baseball program has won five conference titles and the Bulls have made 13 NCAA appearances.
