This Week in USF Athletics

Listen to Bulls Beat
Bulls fans can get their USF news every Monday, Wednesday and Friday during the summer on Bulls Beat. Darek Sharp hosts a half-hour show filled with exclusive interviews, highlights, full recaps and game previews on all USF sports teams. Bulls Beat can be heard on Bulls Unlimited, a channel devoted to USF sports 24/7. Search USF on the IHeart Radio app to download the channel. The show repeats each half hour from 7-9 every morning, with an additional airing at 12:30 p.m.

Bulls Weekly Highlights
  • Prior to the start of fall camp this week, four Bulls have been named to preseason watch lists for national awards – tight end Mitchell Wilcox (John Mackey Award), cornerback Mike Hampton (Jim Thorpe Award), right tackle Marcus Norman (Outland Trophy) and kicker Coby Weiss (Lou Groza Award).
  • USF men's basketball travels to Canada for its foreign tour that takes place Saturday through Friday, Aug. 9.
  • Tommy Santiago has returned to Ken Eriksen's softball staff as the Bulls' new assistant coach.
  • Incoming USF women's basketball freshman guard Maria Alvarez shined for Colombia at the FIBA U19 Women's Basketball World Cup in Thailand (get more info below).
  • USF men's golf senior Kyle Flexsenhar was named a Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar by the Golf Coaches Association of America for the 2018-19 season.

TAMPA, JULY 29, 2019 – Take a look ahead at the week in USF Athletics and catch up on last week's news:

Football
32982Important Upcoming Events: Meet the USF football team and get ready for the 2019 season by attending the Bulls Kickoff Luncheon on Thursday, Aug. 15. The event begins at 11 a.m. at Tampa Marriott Water Street. Reserve your spot HERE… USF Fan Fest returns to the Yuengling Center on Saturday, Aug. 10 at 2 p.m.

This Week: Third-year USF head coach Charlie Strong and the Bulls begin fall camp this week at the Morsani Complex. Student-athletes report Thursday and camp action gets underway Friday.

Last Week: Three Bulls were named to preseason watch lists for national awards last week – cornerback Mike Hampton (Jim Thorpe Award), right tackle Marcus Norman (Outland Trophy), kicker Coby Weiss (Lou Groza Award). Senior tight end Mitchell Wilcox recently earned a spot on the preseason watch list for the 2019 John Mackey Award… Senior defensive end Kirk Livingstone was selected as a nominee for the 2019 Allstate American Football Coaches Good Works Team, an annual award given to college football players for the impact they make off the field. Need to Know: USF will open its third season under head coach Charlie Strong with a primetime clash vs. Wisconsin on Friday, Aug. 30 at Raymond James Stadium (7 p.m. kickoff, TV: ESPN). Softball
This Week: The Junior Bulls All-Skills Camp (ages 7-12) is set for Monday at USF Softball Stadium. Get registration info HERE

32995Last Week: Tommy Santiago has returned to Ken Eriksen's staff as USF's new assistant coach. Previously an assistant coach for the Bulls from 2015-16, Santiago helped the program capture the 2016 American Athletic Conference regular season title and make an appearance in the Tallahassee Regional. Learn more HERE… USF ace Georgina Corrick and former Bulls standout Lauren Evans both shined in the Europe/Africa Olympic Qualifier tournament for the Great Britain national team, which nearly earned a spot in the 2020 Olympics. Women's Basketball

Men's Golf
32993Last Week: Kyle Flexsenhar was rewarded for his efforts on and off the course by being named a Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar by the Golf Coaches Association of America for the 2018-19 season. Get more info HERE.

Need to Know: Program standout Albin Bergstrom recently helped Sweden win the 2019 European Amateur Team Championship. Bergstrom secured the victory over England in the championship match as Sweden captured its first European Amateur Team Championship title since 1961.

Women's Golf
Last Week: USF women's golf continued "The Uprising" of the program in a big way last season and the goal is to take improvement to the next level throughout the 2019-20 schedule that was released last week. Need to Know: Head coach Denise Schilte-Brown and her staff recently added defender Lucy Roberts (Cheshire, England), defender Andrea Capmany (Escazu, Costa Rica) and midfielder Rosalia Muiño Gonzalez (Coruna, Spain) to the Bulls' 2019 roster. Men's Soccer

About USF Athletics
USF Athletics sponsors 19 varsity men's and women's teams that compete in 11 different sports, 18 at the NCAA Division I level in the American Athletic Conference. The Bulls' athletic program began in 1965 and is in its 53rd season in 2018-19. Nearly 500 student-athletes train and compete in the athletic district located on the east end of the campus in Tampa, Fla. The Bulls have claimed 18 American Athletic Conference team titles since joining the conference in 2013, and own 119 conference titles overall. Nine USF programs reached national post-season competition in the 2017-18 season and six were ranked in the Top 25 nationally. The Bulls posted a combined annual grade-point average over 3.0 for the third straight year in 2017-18 and have posted a program record eight straight semesters with a combined GPA over 3.0. USF has had more than 250 student-athletes earn their degree in the last three years.
