USF Earns First Shutout of Season in 2-0 Win over Saint Leo

SAINT LEO, Fla., Aug. 29, 2019 – No. 21 USF women's soccer team challenged Saint Leo all night and was rewarded with a 2-0 win in its first road game of the season.

The Bulls (2-1) pressured immediately after the opening kick and never relented. In the 17th minute, Senior Andrea Hauksdottir (Kopavogur, Iceland) fired off a shot that was parried away by Saint Leo's Julia Ortiz. The rebound bounced to the right of the goal to Aubrey Megrath (West Palm Beach, Fla.) who fired off a shot that found its way into the goal.

South Florida's defense held strong throughout the match as Saint Leo did not get a shot off until the 49th minute. The shot was easily handled by freshman goalkeeper Katrina Haarmann (Caledon, Ontario, Canada).

Hauksdottir added an insurance goal in the 86th minute when she dribbled through the Saint Leo defense and fired a shot past the Lion's goalkeeper to seal the 2-0 victory.

Junior Sydney Martinez earned the win after making the start, but the shutout effort was shared with Haarmann, who came in for the second half. South Florida kept up its high-intensity offensive effort as well, taking 23 shots during the match with 14 of those being on goal.

Quotable
Head coach Denise Schilte-Brown on the win…
"I think the finishing group, the group that came in after, I thought they worked hard and tried hard. We had a lot of crosses and shots. I'd like more goals to be going in. If you look at the statistics, the number of shots and the number of goals for the last three games, they're not as high as we would like, but there's chances."

Key Stat
1 – The Bulls only allowed one shot on goal throughout the game.

Notable
  • Senior Megrath netted her 17th career goal and her sixth career game-winning goal. Hauksdottir also earned her 18th career assist on the goal.
  • Martinez participated in her 8th shutout. Last season, she earned four individual shutouts and three combined shutouts.
