USF Shuts Out Penn State in Midweek Battle

TAMPA, Fla., March 11, 2020 – The University of South Florida softball team took the lead in the fourth inning and never looked back in a 1-0 win over Penn State on Wednesday evening. Georgina Corrick earned her 12th straight win in her 10th complete game of the season.

USF combined for seven hits in the win. AnaMarie Bruni (Schwenksville, Pa.) went 3-for-3 in the win and added a run to her total while also stealing a base. Madison Epperson (Tampa, Fla.) had the game's sole RBI, her eighth of the year.

While pitchers dueled for most of the game, each team had its opportunities to score. Penn State put runners on the corners in the first, while USF had singles from Bailee Leistl (Valrico, Fla.) and Bruni to put two on in the bottom of the inning. Corrick (Sanford, Fla.) and Penn State's Bailey Parshall ultimately escaped both threats and kept the game scoreless until the fourth.

Bruni began the fourth with a single, before stealing second and advancing to third on a groundout from Bethaney Keen (Bradenton, Fla.). Epperson ended the scoreless stalemate, driving home Bruni to give the Bulls a 1-0 lead.

Corrick continued to dominate in the rest of the game, earning the complete-game shutout victory in the 1-0 win.

Quotable
Coach Tommy Santiago on the takeaways from tonight's game…
"It was a great team win tonight against a very tough pitcher in Parshall for Penn State. I'm very proud of the fight the girls had tonight. Anytime you can get good pitching and solid defense it will give you a good chance to win and we had that tonight."
