Bulls Split Doubleheader Against No. 23 Wichita State

TAMPA, Fla. April 24, 2021 – The University of South Florida softball team secured at least a series tie by splitting a doubleheader against No. 23 Wichita State. The Shockers took game one, 14-3, but the Bulls shut down the Wichita State offense to win game two, 3-0.

Georgina Corrick (Sanford, Fla.) threw her second complete-game of the weekend in game two. Kyndall Williams (Trenton, Fla.) continued a successful weekend at the plate, hitting a two-run home run in game one and driving home another run in game two.

Game One – WSU 14, USF 3
Wichita State wasted no time in starting its offense in game one. The Shockers tallied 14 runs through four innings, threatening a run-rule victory after five.

The Bulls attempted a comeback in the fifth. Jordyn Kadlub (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) hit a home run two batters into the innings to get USF on the board. Alexis Johns (Sarasota, Fla.) singled in the next at-bat and was driven home off a two-run homer from Williams. USF's attempt to close the gap ended there, giving Wichita State the victory.

Game Two – USF 3, WSU 0
Corrick earned the start in game two of the doubleheader and shut down the Shocker's offensive efforts. In seven innings in the circle, the junior threw 12 strikeouts and only allowed three hits, with only one baserunner advancing to second base.

USF took the lead in the fifth. Bethaney Keen (Bradenton, Fla.) singled and was driven home off a triple from Megan Pierro (Lutz, Fla.). Two batters later, Alanah Rivera (St. Petersburg, Fla.) doubled home Pierro to give the Bulls a 2-0 lead after five.

The Bulls added another run in the sixth, as Williams drove home Johns to put USF up 3-0. Corrick continued her success and earned her 17th win of the year by completing her shutout effort.

Quotable
Head coach Ken Eriksen on today's games…
"It was nice to see this team rebound after struggling in game one today. We saw Wichita States firepower on full display. However, Georgina really teamed up with Josie Foreman on a great strategy to neutralize their hitters. It's pretty cool when you have a pitcher and a catcher call their own game. The timely hitting was allowed to happen because of those two keeping the Shockers at zero. I'm looking forward to seeing how this team plays the rest of the year."

Notables
  • Corrick has thrown double-digit strikeouts in each of her last four appearances.
  • Williams has hit two home runs this weekend, doubling her career total which now sits at four.
  • Head coach Ken Eriksen now has 998 career wins. He could hit 1,000 as soon as next weekend against East Carolina.
