ORLANDO, Fla. May 8, 2021 – The University of South Florida softball team fell in a pair of walk-off defeats against UCF on Saturday. After a 4-3 loss in game one, the Bulls struggled to contain UCF's offense in a 9-1 run-rule game two.
AnaMarie Bruni stole her 34
th base of the season in game two, setting a new USF single-season record. She passed Shelly Riker, who stole 33 bases in the 2002 season. She now has 95 stolen bases in her career, nine behind Riker, who stole 104 bases between 2001 and 2004.
Game One – UCF 4, USF 3
UCF struck first in the first game of the doubleheader, building a 2-0 lead heading into the fourth inning.
Kyndall Williams (Trenton, Fla.) cut into the Knights' lead with a solo home run to left field in the top of the fourth.
The Bulls took the lead in the fifth. After Bruni and
Alexis Johns (Sarasota, Fla.) reached to start the inning, Williams singled home Johns to tie the game. Bruni scored later on a wild pitch, to give USF a 3-2 lead.
The Knights earned the victory as two scored in the bottom of the seventh, with the winning run scoring on a sacrifice bunt.
Game Two – UCF 9, USF 1 (5 innings)
South Florida struck first in the second game of the day.
Alanah Rivera (St. Petersburg, Fla.) scored in the bottom of the third off a sacrifice from Johns.
UCF's offense opened up in the bottom of the third, taking the lead on a two-run single. The Knights added one more in the fourth and six runs in the fifth to earn the victory.
Notables
- USF will be the second seed at the American Athletic Conference Tournament and will face Memphis in the first round.
- Corrick earned the loss in a game she had a lead in for the first time since the 2019 NCAA tournament. Her last blown lead was May 18th, 2019 against South Carolina in the NCAA regionals.
