Bull-ympians Update #1
TAMPA, Fla., July 23, 2021 – Six with connections to University of South Florida Athletics have started competition in Tokyo as the opening ceremonies marked the formal start of Tokyo 2020 on Friday.
 Â
An updated schedule of events including this week's results with USF participants is listed below.
Â
Softball
USF softball and USA softball head coach
Ken Eriksen and USF/USA athletic trainer
Michele Latimer have helped the Eagles to a 2-0 start thus far in Tokyo. Â
Â
Team USA opened up group play with a 2-0 win over Italy on July 21. Cat Osterman tossed nine strikeouts in six innings, as Michelle Moultrie drove home the game's winning run.
Â
"It was great for the team to start the tournament off with a win against a gritty opponent," Eriksen said. "We haven't played against Italy since 2014 and it's obvious they play a higher-level game than they did 7 years ago. They have been through a tough time with the untimely death of their Coach a few months back, and I give the current staff and the players a tremendous amount of credit and respect for what they are doing."
Â
The next day, the team was back to its winning ways with a 1-0 win over No. 3 Canada. Monica Abbott threw a complete-game shutout and took a no-hitter into the sixth to earn the win.
Â
"It's a rivalry anytime any of these Olympic teams get together and today you saw that," Eriksen said. "The Canada pitching staff did a great job against our offense, but our hitters stepped up in very clutch situations and came through. Monica did a phenomenal job in the circle, coming up with some crucial strikeouts and executing a great game plan with Aubree behind the plate. Our defense was also locked in, making some high-level plays out in the field to give our offense some time to settle in. Overall, it was a great day on the softball field."
Â
The squad is back in action tonight, playing Mexico at 1:30 a.m. on July 24.
