TAMPA, Fla., March 12, 2022 – The University of South Florida softball team earned its fifth straight shutout victory with a 1-0 decision in eight innings against Stony Brook on a chilly Saturday afternoon. South Florida improves to 21-3 on the season and has won 13 straight games.
Â
Georgina Corrick (Sanford, Fla.) threw her 80
th career complete game, setting a new program-record by passing
Monica Triner's (1996-99) 79. The pitcher hasn't allowed a run in 76.1 innings in the circle or an earned run in 82.1 innings.
Â
Pitchers dueled throughout the game. While Corrick worked through multiple threats to keep the game scoreless, so did Dawn Bodrug for Stony Brook. Together, the pair combined to strike out 26 batters, only allowing four hits (with Corrick ceding one) and four walks.
Â
The game remained tied going into extra innings and tournament rules use the international tiebreaker starting in the eighth, placing a runner on second to start the inning.
Â
In Stony Brook's half of the eighth, the runner stole third with none out, putting the pressure even more on USF's defense. The next batter popped to short, and after an intentional walk, the next Sea Wolf flied out to shallow left to earn the second out. Corrick struck the next batter out to end the inning, giving USF the opportunity to walk it off.
Â
With
Emilee Hanlon (Dunkirk, N.Y.) on second to start the inning,
Jordyn Kadlub (Wesley Chapel) reached on a fielder's choice with Stony Brook also failing to get Hanlon out on her advance, then stole second to have runners on first and second with one out.
Alexis Johns (Sarasota) singled in the next at bat which allowed Hanlon to score the game winner.
