FORT MYERS, Fla., March 1, 2022 – The University of South Florida softball team earned a midweek doubleheader sweep of the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles, winning an extra-inning thriller, 5-0, followed by a 6-3 victory in regulation.
Â
Georgina Corrick (Sanford, Fla.) tossed a three-hit, eleven-inning gem in game one. Not only did the senior break the single-game strikeout record, tossing nineteen in the game, she threw her 38
th career shutout in the process. She passed Erica Nunn's 18 K effort against Temple in 2014 for the single-game record, a mark she already tied back in 2020 with 18 against Wisconsin. Her 38 shutouts completely passed
Monica Triner's 37 she threw from 1996-99.
Â
Corrick wasn't the only one to break records in the game.
Josie Foreman (West Palm Beach, Fla.) recorded 21 putouts and set a new single-game record, passing
Carmela Liwag's 20 against Pitt in 2005.
Â
Alexis Johns (Sarasota, Fla.) finished the day going five-for-10 at the plate with two runs and two RBIs, while
Vivian Ponn, playing in her hometown of Fort Myers, Fla., drew three walks between the two games.
Â
Game 1 – USF 5, FGCU 0 (11 Innings)
The Bulls played a marathon for the first game of the doubleheader. While the Bulls' offense had opportunities throughout, Corrick took a no-hitter into the fifth inning while allowing just two baserunners in that span while tallying nine strikeouts in five innings.
Â
The Bulls offense finally broke the stalemate in the eleventh inning. Â
Madison Epperson (Tampa, Fla.) reached on an error with one out and reached third on a
Dezarae Maldonado (Winter Haven, Fla.) double.
Jordyn Kadlub (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) followed up with a double of her own, driving home Epperson and Maldonado to give USF a 2-0 lead. Following a bunt-single from Johns, Kadlub scored on a
Meghan Sheehan (Forest Hill, Md.) fielder's choice and
Emma Humplik (Orange, Texas) drove home Johns and Sheehan to cap the scoring at 5-0.
Â
Corrick continued adding to her strikeout total as the game continued, fanning two in the sixth, one in the seventh, three in the eighth, two in the ninth, one in the tenth and one in the eleventh to surpass the previous single-game school record of 18 set by Erica Nunn in 2014 and tied by Corrick in 2020.
Â
Game 2 – USF 6, FGCU 3
While the pitchers stole the show in game one, the bats came alive in game two.
Â
South Florida took the lead in the third inning, with three coming across in the frame.
Alanah Rivera (St. Petersburg, Fla.) drove home a run on a fielder's choice, with Johns beating the throw home. Epperson followed up later in the inning with a double that plated Rivera and Ponn.
Â
FGCU responded in the fourth. Reedy Davenport started the Eagles with a solo home-run to left field, while two runners scored on a bases-loaded single later in the inning to tie the game.
Â
The Bulls regained the lead in the sixth.
Lydia Castro (Lithia, Fla.) drove home her first career run on her first career hit, a single that scored
Courtney Waldo (Palmetto, Fla.). Johns kept the scoring going, doubling with the bases loaded to drive home another pair of runs to push the score 6-3.
Antoinette Hill (Braidwood, Ill.) earned her fist collegiate win in the victory, tossing 3.1 shutout innings and only allowing one hit.
