South Florida drops midweek series opener to Boston College

Freshman Marcus Brodil went 3-for-3 with a double in Tuesday’s 18-8 loss.

TAMPA (March 8, 2022) – The University of South Florida (7-5) opened a two-game series with Boston College (5-5) on Tuesday night and fell in a high-scoring affair, 18-8. True freshman Marcus Brodil recorded his first multi-hit game with a 3-for-3 effort, reaching base safely in all four at-bats and scoring a pair of runs.

The fireworks started on the first pitch of the ballgame as the Eagles jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a solo home run. An RBI-single by Nick Gonzalez (Tampa) knotted the score in the bottom of the second before Boston College regained a 2-1 lead in the top of the third.

Nelson Rivera (Toa Alto, Puerto Rico) doubled home the tying run once again in the bottom of the third inning, but the Eagles answered with two runs in the fourth frame and tacked on one more in the fifth to stretch their lead to 7-4.

Carmine Lane (Lake Placid) connected on his fourth home run of the season in the fifth and an RBI-single by Bobby Boser (Wesley Chapel) made it a 7-6 ballgame later in the frame. BC answered again with three runs in the top of the sixth. Lane's big night continued with a two-run double in the bottom of the sixth to make it a 10-8 affair, but that was as close as the Bulls would get before Boston College added eight more runs over the next to innings to its tally.

The game saw 15 total pitchers take the mound, including nine for Boston College. The USF pitching staff had an uncharacteristically laborious night, issuing nine walks, hitting four batters and uncorking five wild pitches – all season highs.

Tommy Groom (Orlando) made his first appearances for USF after missing last season with an injury and allowed just one hits and struck out one batter over the final 1.1 IP of the game.

Notable

  • Tuesday was USF's first loss this season when scoring six or more runs.
  • Lane extended his career-long hitting streak to 12 games, going 3-for-4 with a double, homer, walk and three RBI.
  • Gonzalez (Tampa) went 2-for-3 with three RBI.
  • Drew Brutcher (Lakeland) recorded a pair of walks and has reached base safely in all 12 games this season.
