USF Track and Field Wraps Up Weekend at Penn Relays, UNF Invite

Tampa, Fla., April 30, 2022 – The University of South Florida track and field team finished a successful weekend of competition at the Penn Relays and UNF Invite with two event wins and six podium finishes on the meets' final days. Romaine Beckford won the high jump at the Penn Relays, while Eron Carter took first at the UNF Invite in the discus throw.

"We took a positive step forward this weekend in both meets," head coach Erik Jenkins said. "It was nice to see our student athletes perform at a competitive level in such a large meet as Penn Relays. It was good to see growth in that hectic environment. Our athletes who competed in Jacksonville also finished with solid performances and continue to sharpen their skills for championship season."

Penn Relays
Beckford (Portland, Jamaica) took first place at one of the nation's most prestigious meets in the high jump. His mark of 2.23 meters (7-3.75) moved him up to second on USF's all-time list after he entered the weekend at third.
 
Shaneylix Davila (Kissimmee, Fla.) finished second in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.29 seconds. Hannah Connell (Bridgetown, Barbados) finished quickly behind, taking fifth with a time of 13.41 seconds that earned her the fifth spot on USF's all-time list.
 
The 4x100 team of Connell, Shaniya Benjamin (Tampa, Fla.), Jadaja Baxter (Sandy Springs, Ga.) and Kadesha Prescott (Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago) took third in the event, running a 44.66 that moved the group up to third in USF's record books.
 
UNF Invite
Eron Carter (Palatka, Fla.) continued a successful field season with a first-place finish in the discus at the UNF Invite with a mark of 56.25 meters (184-6). Johann Jeremiah (St. George's, Grenada) finished in fifth in the event with a 48.6- meters (159-5).
 
Annia Ashley (Kingston, Jamaica) led the way for the women at the meet, finishing second in the high jump with a 1.68-meter (5-6) leap. David Ajama (Lowell, Mass.) wrapped up the meet with a third place showing in the triple jump. He posted a 15.17-meter (49-9.25) jump.

About USF Track and Field
The USF track and field team has earned 54 All-America selections and at least one All-American in 10 of the last 12 years, including a record eight athletes claiming 11 honors in 2021. Tampa native Shaniya Benjamin set a program record earning three All-American honors during the 2021 outdoor season, while triple jumper Matthew O'Neal, a 2016 graduate, became USF's first six-time NCAA All-American. Bulls have posted two NCAA runner-up finishes since 2013 - O'Neal (triple jump, 2016) and Courtney Anderson (high jump, 2013). Head coach Erik Jenkins took over the program in 2020 and in the 2021 outdoor season the Bulls posted seven program records and 40 top 10 all-time program marks. USF hosted the 2018 NCAA Track and Field East Preliminary and the 2021 AAC Outdoor Championship at the USF Track and Field Stadium located on the east end of campus.
